Jamaica Travel Tips

Take about $50.00 in one dollar  US bills.  You will need very little money on your all inclusive vacation, and no need to convert to Jamaican dollars.  You can use dollars for tips.

If you are taking several electronic devices, you may want to pack a small power strip so you have adequate plugs to charge your devices.

Most airlines will charge $25 – $30 in each direction for each checked bag.  Be sure it weighs less than 50 pounds.  Charter flights usually allow one free bag.  You are also allowed one carry-on bag per person. Consider packing one outfit in your travel companion’s bag, so if your luggage is delayed, you have a backup.

The ride to Negril, Runaway Bay, or Ocho Rios is over an hour, so use the bathroom before you board your transfer bus.  You can buy a beverage (including the local beer, Red Stripe, or the local pop, Ting) from a stand as you leave the airport.

Check in time is usually 3 p.m., so if you have an early arrival, pack your swimming suit in your carry-on.  The hotel will hold your bags, and you can begin enjoying the resort.

Phone calls will be expensive.  Check rates and service with your cell phone provider for both calls and texts before you leave home.  Most resorts will have WiFi service, but not always free.

As soon as you check in at the hotel, ask the policy for making reservations at their  specialty restaurants.  Some allow you to book in advance, others only the day of.  Men will often be required to wear a collared shirt and long pants (and no sandals) at these restaurants.

The sun is intense, so bring plenty of lotion (it’s very expensive to buy US products in Jamaica) and drink plenty of liquids to avoid dehydration. Remember to pack any liquids, including sun tan lotion and shampoo in your checked bag.

Exchange beach towels late afternoon so you’re set for the next morning.

The Montego Bay airport has great duty free shopping.  If you want to bring home alcohol (great Jamaican rum, Tia Maria, great cream liquors, etc.), as well as Blue Mountain coffee, you can buy it while you are waiting for your return flight.  If you are changing planes on your return flight, you will be required to put the liquor in your checked bag.

When leaving, you may want to try the “Club Mobay” at the airport.  The cost is about $30 but purchasing this option allows you to fast track through security and immigration and then relax in this beautiful lounge, prior to boarding, complete with free food, drinks and WiFi.  There is also a separate smoking lounge section, plus a mini spa.

If you have any questions or problems during your stay, first contact your local tour representative (phone number is on your documents).  If there is a problem with the hotel, first talk to the front desk clerk or manager. If all else fails, contact us.   Do not wait until you return.  We want you to enjoy your vacation.
